Where it came from
Abrade was introduced in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering set Hour of Devastation. Designed as an efficient, versatile red instant, it quickly became a staple in various constructed formats due to its ability to either destroy an artifact or deal damage to a creature. This specific version was released as a promotional card, distributed through events like Friday Night Magic to encourage local community participation.
The card features illustration by Johann Bodin, who focused on the destructive, visceral nature of the spell’s effect. The art depicts a moment of chaotic energy, emphasizing the raw red mana characteristic of the Amonkhet plane's setting. Upon its release, the promotional version was well-received by players for its alternate art treatment, which remains a sought-after aesthetic upgrade for competitive decks.
