Abzan Charm

Abzan Charm was released in 2014 as part of the Khans of Tarkir expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as part of a cycle of charms representing the five wedge-colored factions of the plane of Tarkir, with the Abzan Houses focused on endurance, ancestral loyalty, and defensive resilience. Mechanically, it offers versatility by providing a choice of three distinct effects—exile a large creature, draw cards at the cost of life, or grant +1/+1 counters—which reflected the faction's identity of balanced, strategic survival.

The artwork was commissioned from Mathias Kollros, who sought to capture the aesthetic of the Abzan culture, which draws heavy inspiration from historical nomadic civilizations of the Middle East and Central Asia. The illustration emphasizes the ornate, sand-swept armor and the harsh desert environment that defines the clan. Upon its release, the card saw immediate competitive play for its high level of utility in the Standard format, becoming a cornerstone for decks that utilized the black, white, and green color combination.
