What it does

When Acererak enters, if you haven't completed Tomb of Annihilation, return Acererak to its owner's hand and venture into the dungeon.

Whenever Acererak attacks, for each opponent, you create a 2/2 black Zombie creature token unless that player sacrifices a creature of their choice.

Provenance

Where it came from

Acererak the Archlich was released in 2021 as part of the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms set, the first full Magic: The Gathering expansion to cross over with the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop roleplaying game. This specific card represents a legendary lich from D&D lore, designed to mechanically integrate the 'dungeon crawling' keyword introduced in this set. The card allows players to venture into dungeons and ultimately summon the titular villain to the battlefield, echoing his reputation as a formidable antagonist across various editions of the game.

The art for this promo version was created by Wisnutanum, who opted for a stylized, borderless aesthetic that emphasizes the ominous presence of the lich. The design intent was to capture the dark, iconic silhouette of Acererak while maintaining the high-fantasy illustrative style consistent with the broader Magic brand. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its thematic accuracy, successfully bridging the gap between card game strategy and the specific narrative mechanics of the Tomb of Horrors module.
