Where it came from
Acererak the Archlich was released in 2021 as part of the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms set, the first full Magic: The Gathering expansion dedicated to the Dungeons & Dragons universe. This specific version is a promo card, typically distributed through event participation or promotional kits, designed to integrate the iconic D&D antagonist into the card game's mechanics through the 'dungeon delving' keyword introduced in this set.
The card features artwork by Dmitry Burmak, a frequent contributor to Magic: The Gathering who often utilizes a dramatic, high-fantasy aesthetic. In designing Acererak, the goal was to capture the Lich's legendary status from the Tomb of Horrors module, depicting him with his signature phylactery and an imposing, skeletal presence. The card was received by players as a flavorful representation of the character, particularly noted for its unique ability to cycle through dungeon cards repeatedly.
