Where it came from
Acererak the Archlich was released in 2021 as part of the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms set, the first full Magic: The Gathering expansion to integrate the Dungeons & Dragons universe. The card is designed to mechanically emulate the experience of a classic dungeon crawl, utilizing the dungeon-delving mechanic introduced in this set to allow players to venture through iconic locations from the D&D mythos.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the Lich’s chilling, skeletal presence in a dark, imposing aesthetic consistent with his legacy as the primary antagonist of the Tomb of Horrors. The design reflects the character's status as a quintessential master of death, favoring synergy with triggered abilities that reward players for completing the dungeon sequences he initiates.
