What it does

When Acererak enters, if you haven't completed Tomb of Annihilation, return Acererak to its owner's hand and venture into the dungeon.

Whenever Acererak attacks, for each opponent, you create a 2/2 black Zombie creature token unless that player sacrifices a creature of their choice.

Provenance

Where it came from

Acererak the Archlich was released as part of the Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms-themed Secret Lair drops. This specific iteration features artwork by Greg Staples, who was commissioned to capture the iconic villain of the Tomb of Horrors in a style evocative of classic Dungeons & Dragons sourcebooks. The release was designed to bridge the gap between Magic: The Gathering players and traditional tabletop roleplaying enthusiasts, providing a stylized, premium aesthetic for a card that mechanically interacts with the dungeon-crawling sub-game.

The reception of this card was rooted in its high-fantasy illustration and the nostalgia it evoked for veteran tabletop players. By focusing on the lich's menacing and ancient visage, the design team aimed to reinforce the legendary status of the character within gaming lore. This release marked a significant moment in the Secret Lair series, cementing the trend of cross-branding between Wizards of the Coast's two flagship properties while offering collectors a unique, visually dense alternative to the standard set version.
