Provenance

Where it came from

Whitemane Lion was originally introduced in the Planar Chaos set in 2007, serving as a tactical tool that allowed players to return a creature they controlled to their hand. The card was designed to function as both a defensive stabilizer and a way to re-trigger beneficial 'enters the battlefield' abilities, a mechanic that has since become a staple in White's color pie within the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem.

The Masters 25 version, numbered 39, was released in 2018 to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the game. Featuring artwork by Johannes Voss, this edition refined the creature's aesthetic, emphasizing a noble, celestial feline appearance that aligned with the high-fantasy tradition of the franchise. It was received as a functional and iconic reprint, valued by players for its utility in limited formats and its contribution to the game's evolving history of creature-based synergy.
