Where it came from
Drover of the Mighty was released in 2023 as part of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Commander set, a collection of four preconstructed decks designed to complement the main expansion release. Within the context of Magic: The Gathering, the card serves as a thematic cornerstone for the Veloci-RAMP-tor deck, which centers on the popular dinosaur creature type. The design reflects the set's focus on subterranean exploration and the prehistoric, primal aesthetics of the Ixalan plane.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the stoic and rugged essence of the creature-tending drover. The illustration emphasizes the symbiotic relationship between the humanoid caretaker and the powerful dinosaurs they manage, reinforcing the card's mechanical utility of ramping resources for larger threats. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its efficiency in supporting tribal synergy decks, quickly becoming a staple for those focusing on dinosaur-themed strategies.
