Where it came from
Aerial Extortionist was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna Commander set, a collection themed around a 1920s-inspired, Art Deco metropolis controlled by organized crime syndicates. The card was designed to support the 'flying' keyword mechanic, rewarding players for utilizing creatures with evasion while simultaneously providing a tactical tool for tempo disruption through its exile effect.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized the set's signature aesthetic of gilded architecture and cinematic noir lighting. The visual design emphasizes the predatory, high-altitude nature of the creature, fitting into the overarching narrative of the brokers and mob enforcers that define the visual language of the New Capenna plane.
