Where it came from
Aerial Formation was released in 2014 as part of the Journey into Nyx expansion, the final set in the Theros block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set focused on the block's central theme of Greek mythology, specifically the intersection between the mortal realm and the divine domain of Nyx, the night sky. The card represents the enchantment-heavy gameplay mechanics characteristic of the block, allowing players to manipulate the battlefield through aura-based strategies.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a prominent artist within the game's community known for his ethereal and glowing aesthetic. Voss designed the artwork to depict a group of figures elevated by divine influence, fitting the set's narrative of gods bestowing powers upon their followers. The card received a modest reception as a functional utility tool in the Limited format, appreciated by players for its ability to provide evasion in aggressive blue-aligned decks.
