Where it came from
Aerial Extortionist was released as a promotional card for the Streets of New Capenna Commander set in 2022. This set drew heavily from 1920s Art Deco aesthetics and organized crime tropes, blending them with the high-fantasy mechanics of Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to function within a multiplayer Commander format, emphasizing interaction and resource taxation through its 'exile' and 'draw' abilities, which lean into the White color identity of taxing opponents' actions.
The artwork, illustrated by artist Wisnu Tan, captures the thematic essence of New Capenna by depicting a stylized, winged figure overseeing the cityscape. Tan's approach integrates the sharp angles and gilded motifs synonymous with the Art Deco movement, providing a visual representation of the plane's opulent yet corrupt social hierarchy. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its utility in controlling the board state and maintaining card advantage in long-form games.
