Where it came from
Aether Gale was originally released as part of the Explorers of Ixalan board game set in 2017. Designed as a standalone multiplayer experience, the set combined elements of traditional board games with the strategic mechanics of Magic: The Gathering. The card itself represents the high-fantasy aesthetic of the Ixalan plane, a setting heavily influenced by themes of exploration, Mesoamerican-inspired civilizations, and nautical adventure.
The artwork for this particular card was produced by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent illustrator within the Magic: The Gathering franchise known for her detailed character portraits and atmospheric lighting. Her work on this piece sought to capture the chaotic energy of magical storms prevalent in the setting. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional utility tool within the game's specific multiplayer format, serving as a tactical reset button for players maneuvering through the game's map-based board.
