Where it came from
Aetherflux Reservoir was originally introduced in the Kaladesh set, designed by Wizards of the Coast to act as a potent combo engine that rewards players for casting multiple spells in a single turn. The card depicts a massive, ornate vessel capturing and storing raw magical energy, reflecting the industrial and innovative theme of its home plane. The concept centered on the idea of 'storm' mechanics and high-velocity gameplay, quickly becoming a staple in various formats for its ability to weaponize life totals.
The version from The Brothers' War Retro Artifacts series features a distinct, nostalgic aesthetic meant to evoke the look of classic 1990s trading cards. This special subset was created to celebrate the history of Magic: The Gathering by reprinting influential artifacts with the original card frame design. By placing the modern Aetherflux Reservoir into this historical visual context, the design team bridged the gap between contemporary card power and the enduring visual identity of the game’s early years.
