Where it came from
Aetherflux Reservoir was introduced in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering set Kaladesh, a plane inspired by an intersection of Indian aesthetics and steampunk technology. Within the game's lore, the device functions as a massive, ornate battery designed to harvest and store refined aether, the magical energy source that powers the civilization of Ghirapur. Its presence in the set serves as a centerpiece for the inventor-themed mechanics, representing the potential for both infinite innovation and cataclysmic power.
The card was illustrated by Cliff Childs, who focused on the interplay between the intricate, golden filigree characteristic of Kaladeshian architecture and the surging, volatile energy contained within the core. The design intent was to capture the precarious nature of the reservoir, balancing its elegant exterior with the dangerous, explosive pressure of the aether trapped inside. Upon release, it was recognized for its unique combo-enabling ability, which rewards players for casting multiple spells in rapid succession to charge the device toward a lethal discharge.
