Where it came from
Affa Guard Hound was released in 2009 as part of the Duel Decks: Zendikar vs. Eldrazi set, a preconstructed product designed to showcase the thematic conflict between the Zendikar plane and the encroaching Eldrazi titans. The card reflects the defensive, protective nature of the Kor race native to the setting, serving as a mechanical representation of their vigilance against the world-shaking threat of the Eldrazi brood.
The artwork was created by illustrator Matt Cavotta, who utilized a bold, cinematic style to capture the hound in a moment of alert readiness. Within the context of the game's mechanics, the card's flash ability was intended to provide players with a surprise defensive option, embodying the sudden tactical responses characteristic of the Kor faction during the set's narrative arc.
