Where it came from
Affa Guard Hound was released in 2010 as part of the Rise of the Eldrazi set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set represented the third and final installment of the Zendikar block, centering on the awakening of the titular, world-consuming Eldrazi titans. Within the game's mechanics, the card serves as a common white creature designed to provide defensive utility, reflecting the frantic efforts of Zendikar's inhabitants to protect their home from the cosmic threat.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Jesper Ejsing, whose work often characterizes the high-fantasy aesthetic of the era. Ejsing focused on capturing the vigilant, protective nature of the creature, depicting the hound in a stance that emphasizes its loyalty and readiness for combat. Like many common cards from the period, it was intended to fill out the limited play environment, offering players a reliable, low-cost option for navigating the complex board states characteristic of the Rise of the Eldrazi draft experience.
