Where it came from
Affa Guard Hound was released in 2016 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Conspiracy: Take the Crown. This set was designed specifically for draft-based multiplayer gameplay, focusing on political manipulation and 'monarch' mechanics that encouraged players to seize control of the game state. The card was created to serve as a functional defensive tool within this social, high-interaction environment.
The card features artwork by Sidharth Chaturvedi, who employed a detailed, atmospheric style to capture the vigilant nature of the creature. Within the lore of the Multiverse, the hound is depicted as a guardian of the city of Affa, reflecting the set's thematic preoccupation with urban intrigue and power struggles. It was well-received by limited-format players for its utility in stabilizing a board state during the chaotic political exchanges characteristic of the Conspiracy series.
