Aeve, Progenitor Ooze

Aeve, Progenitor Ooze was introduced as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Released in 2021, the set was designed to inject powerful, nostalgic, and often complex cards directly into the Modern format, bypassing the standard rotation of other sets. As a legendary creature, Aeve represents the ongoing exploration of Ooze-themed mechanics, utilizing the storm keyword to generate copies of itself based on the number of spells played previously in a turn.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, who utilized a vivid, unsettling aesthetic to capture the essence of a progenitor entity. The design intent focused on scaling power through board presence, rewarding players who construct decks focused on casting multiple smaller spells in quick succession. Upon release, the card was widely received as a unique engine for niche combo decks, cementing its place as a quintessential build-around piece for players interested in unconventional, storm-based strategies.
