Afterlife

Afterlife was originally printed in the Mirage expansion in 1996 and was later included in the Commander 2014 set as part of the 'Guided by Nature' deck. The card is a white instant that allows a player to destroy a target creature and replace it with a 1/1 white Spirit token with flying. This mechanic, colloquially known in the game as 'removal,' is a staple of white color-aligned utility, intended to mitigate threats while providing a minor compensatory benefit to the opponent.

The artwork for this specific printing was illustrated by Johannes Voss. His design for the Commander 2014 iteration leans into the ethereal, high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of Magic: The Gathering’s modern era, focusing on the transition of a spirit leaving a physical form. The card is highly regarded by players for its efficiency in multiplayer formats, where the ability to answer a significant threat while granting a negligible creature to an opponent is strategically advantageous.
