Where it came from
Released in October 1999 as the opening card of the Mercadian Masques expansion set for Magic: The Gathering, Afterlife serves as a representative example of the set's focus on the distinct culture of the plane of Mercadia. The set was designed to explore a world heavily influenced by commerce and mercantilism, moving away from the high-fantasy themes of previous expansions to embrace a more clockwork-inspired, industrial aesthetic.
The card's evocative illustration was created by artist Heather Hudson, who was a frequent contributor to the game during this era. Her design centers on the visual transition of a creature into a spirit form, capturing the set's emphasis on the cyclical nature of life and death within the game mechanics. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional staple in white-aligned decks, praised for its straightforward utility and thematic alignment with the set's narrative of lingering remnants.
