Provenance

Where it came from

Afterlife was originally released in 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by the team at Wizards of the Coast during a period of rapid evolution for the game, the set sought to introduce new mechanics and flavor, with Afterlife serving as a utility spell within the white color identity to provide board presence after an opponent's creature was destroyed.

The card features artwork by Pete Venters, a prominent illustrator in the game's early years known for his distinct fantasy style. The illustration depicts a spectral figure rising from the remnants of a fallen combatant, capturing the thematic essence of the card's ability. It was later included in 'The List', a curated collection of cards from throughout Magic's history that appear in Set Boosters, introducing the vintage print to a new generation of players.
