Where it came from
Agent of Treachery was originally released in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2020. The card was designed as a high-mana cost creature capable of stealing any permanent from an opponent, a design choice meant to create significant tension and momentum swings in casual and competitive play environments. The promo version, marked with the collector number 43s, was distributed as part of a seasonal promotional program designed to reward players for their engagement at local game stores.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Vincent Proce, who sought to depict a sleek, menacing figure embodying the blue-aligned philosophy of theft and manipulation. Upon its release, the card quickly became a focal point of discussion within the community due to its powerful, repeatable effect. It was eventually restricted or banned in several competitive formats, cementing its reputation as a formidable and controversial piece of game history.
