Where it came from
Ajani's Welcome was originally released as an uncommon enchantment in the 2018 Magic: The Gathering core set, Core Set 2019. The card features the iconic leonin planeswalker Ajani Goldmane, reflecting his thematic focus on life-gain and protection within the game's color identity of white. Its inclusion in 'The List'—a rotating selection of cards reprinted from across Magic's history—allows players to encounter this specific card in Set Boosters, highlighting its enduring utility in casual play.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Kieran Yanner, who captured a poignant moment of reflection for Ajani. The design aim was to evoke the character's role as a mentor and healer, emphasizing the communal aspect of his magic. The card was well-received by the player base, particularly in the Commander format, where its ability to trigger consistent life-gain benefits provides a reliable engine for decks centered around themes of resilience and steady growth.
