Where it came from
Ajani, Valiant Protector was released in 2017 as part of the Aether Revolt expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a planeswalker card, it represents the leonin hero Ajani Goldmane, a recurring and central figure in the game's multiverse narrative. The card was designed to support the '+1/+1 counter' archetype prevalent in the set, reflecting Ajani's role as a protector and mentor who strengthens his allies through magical intervention.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Eric Deschamps, who has been a prolific contributor to the game for many years. Deschamps aimed to capture Ajani in a powerful yet noble stance, emphasizing his signature white-and-gold armor and his dual-wielded axes. Upon release, the card was received as a versatile tool for mid-range decks, particularly noted for its ultimate ability, which allows players to search their library for creatures to bolster their battlefield presence.
