Ajani Vengeant was introduced in the 2008 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Shards of Alara. This set marked a significant milestone in the game's history as it introduced the Planeswalker card type to the core mechanics, establishing these powerful characters as both figures of lore and central strategic elements. The card depicts the leonin warrior Ajani Goldmane, who shifted from his original identity into this red-and-white 'Vengeant' persona following the loss of his brother, Jazal.

The artwork was commissioned from longtime Magic illustrator Wayne Reynolds, whose dynamic, high-energy style became a staple of the era. Reynolds was tasked with capturing the shift in Ajani’s temperament, moving away from his earlier mono-white, healer-aligned incarnation toward a more aggressive, retribution-focused aesthetic. Upon release, the card was widely received as a defining presence in competitive play, particularly in the 'Control' archetypes of the time, where its abilities to manipulate mana and neutralize threats proved highly effective.
