Provenance

Where it came from

Aladdin's Lamp was released in the 1994 Summer Magic expansion, a set colloquially known as Edgar. This set was a re-release of the original Magic: The Gathering base set, intended to address supply shortages in the European market. Because the cards were printed with a distinct white border to differentiate them from the highly collectible black-bordered limited editions, they occupy a unique niche in the game's history as both functional game pieces and artifacts of the game's rapid early growth.

The artwork was commissioned from Mark Tedin, one of the original artists who defined the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering's early years. Tedin approached the design with the game's high-fantasy aesthetic in mind, crafting an illustration that captured the archetypal imagery of a mystical, wish-granting vessel. The card was received by players as a flavorful addition to the artifact pool, though its mechanical complexity and mana requirements often relegated it to casual play rather than the tournament circuits of the era.
