Island Fish Jasconius

Island Fish Jasconius was released in 1993 as part of Arabian Nights, the first expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the set drew heavy inspiration from One Thousand and One Nights. At the time of its creation, the game was still in its infancy, and the design philosophy focused on high-concept fantasy themes and rigid, experimental mechanics that reflected the era's adventurous approach to tabletop gaming.

The card’s artwork was provided by Jesper Myrfors, the game’s original art director. Myrfors utilized a distinctive, gritty aesthetic that helped define the early visual identity of the Magic multiverse. The creature design, featuring a colossal fish carrying an island on its back, served as a literal interpretation of the mythological beast from Middle Eastern folklore. While the card is remembered today largely for its historical significance and unique flavor, it was considered a challenging piece to play competitively during the game's early years due to its high mana cost and restrictive upkeep requirements.
