Where it came from
Alania, Divergent Storm was released as part of the Bloomburrow set in 2024, specifically appearing as a promotional card. The set marked a departure for Magic: The Gathering, featuring a whimsical, anthropomorphic animal theme set in a pastoral plane known as Bloomburrow, designed to contrast with the game's typically more grounded or darker fantasy aesthetics.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, who utilized a soft, evocative style to capture the character's magical connection to storms. As a centerpiece for the Izzet-aligned spellslinger archetype, the design aimed to highlight the synergy between drawing cards and casting spells, receiving positive reception from players for its mechanical focus and charming visual integration into the set's unique world-building.
