Where it came from
Alania, Divergent Storm was released in 2024 as part of the Bloomburrow set for Magic: The Gathering. The set is notable for its anthropomorphic animal theme, departing from the game's typical high-fantasy settings to focus on a pastoral, woodland world. Designed as a legendary creature for the Commander format, Alania embodies the set's focus on otter folk and spellslinger mechanics, emphasizing themes of card drawing and cooperative synergy.
The card's visual identity was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, who utilized a whimsical, painterly style that defines the Bloomburrow aesthetic. By depicting Alania with flowing robes and elemental water motifs, the illustration aims to convey a sense of gentle magic and fluid movement, aligning with the creature type's reputation for ingenuity and curiosity within the lore of the Valley.
