Where it came from
Alania, Divergent Storm was released in 2024 as part of the Bloomburrow set for Magic: The Gathering. The set is notable for its departure from traditional fantasy tropes, centering on a plane inhabited entirely by anthropomorphic animals. Alania represents the blue-aligned otterfolk of this setting, designed to reflect the creature-heavy, spell-slinging mechanics that define the otter archetype within this specific expansion.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who utilized a painterly style to capture Alania in a dynamic, storm-swept pose that emphasizes the elemental magic themes central to the character. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its synergy with spell-copying strategies and its distinct contribution to the visual narrative of the Bloomburrow plane, which seeks to evoke a cozy yet adventurous storybook aesthetic.
