Where it came from
Ambush Krotiq was released in early 2015 as part of the Fate Reforged set for Magic: The Gathering. The set depicts the history of the plane of Tarkir, focusing on a time-displaced narrative where the dragon-god Ugin was saved from destruction. As a green creature card, the Krotiq represents the harsh, survivalist ecology of the world, designed by Wizards of the Coast to support the mechanics of the set by allowing players to return their own creatures to their hands to trigger enter-the-battlefield effects again.
The illustration for the card was provided by artist James Zapata. The design aesthetic reflects the brutalist, nomadic culture of the Temur Frontier, emphasizing the creature's massive, insectoid physicality. Upon its release, the card was viewed primarily as a limited-format utility piece, favored by players for its ability to reset creature abilities during matches, rather than as a centerpiece for constructed competitive play.
