Provenance

Where it came from

Released in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion Amonkhet, the Angel of Sanctions was designed as part of a set heavily influenced by Ancient Egyptian mythology and the theme of a harsh, sun-drenched desert world. As a white rare creature, the card features the 'embalm' mechanic, allowing players to create a token copy of the card from their graveyard, which mirrors the set's central narrative focus on the ritualistic preparation of the dead for an eternal afterlife under the rule of the dragon-god Nicol Bolas.

The artwork was created by the illustrator Igor Kieryluk, who utilized a regal and imposing visual style to reflect the creature's role as an enforcer of divine law. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the competitive community for its utility in removing troublesome threats from the battlefield, becoming a staple in white-based control decks during its time in the Standard format.
