Where it came from
Spring // Mind was released in 2017 as part of the Amonkhet set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The card features a split mechanic, a design choice intended to reflect the set's thematic preoccupation with duality, trial, and the cyclic nature of existence within a desert civilization inspired by ancient Egyptian mythology. It was designed to offer players versatility, allowing them to choose between early-game utility through the creature-focused Spring and late-game card advantage through the spell-focused Mind.
The artwork for this card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for his ethereal and light-focused style. Voss sought to capture the contrast between the growth represented by Spring and the cerebral nature of Mind, utilizing a vibrant color palette that aligns with the aesthetic identity of the Amonkhet plane. The card was well-received by players for its efficiency in Limited formats, where the ability to ramp mana early and draw cards later provided significant tactical flexibility.
