Where it came from
Animate Dead was originally illustrated by Anson Maddocks for the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993. As one of the game's earliest and most iconic enchantment cards, it quickly became a staple of black-aligned decks for its ability to resurrect creatures from the graveyard to the battlefield, a mechanic that defined the 'reanimator' archetype for decades.
The 30th Anniversary Edition version, released in 2022, serves as a commemorative tribute to the game's rich history. It features the classic retro frame and original artwork, meticulously reproduced to evoke the nostalgia of the early nineties. This edition was designed as a non-tournament-legal collector's set, intended to provide players and collectors with an accessible way to own representations of the most influential cards from the game's foundational era.
