Where it came from
Animate Dead was originally released in the 1993 Limited Edition Alpha set as a quintessential black enchantment, designed by Richard Garfield to capture the flavor of necromancy within the game's early ruleset. The card's original illustration by Anson Maddocks became iconic for its unsettling, minimalist depiction of an undead hand emerging from the earth, setting a dark aesthetic tone that defined the game's identity during its formative years.
The 30th Anniversary Edition version, released in 2022, serves as a commemorative reprinting of these early cards, utilizing the classic card frame and the original artwork to evoke nostalgia for the game's inception. While the set was produced as a non-tournament legal collectible to celebrate three decades of the hobby, it remains a significant touchstone for collectors who value the preservation of early aesthetic styles and the historical evolution of the game's design language.
