Where it came from
Animus of Predation was released in August 2016 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Conspiracy: Take the Crown. This set was designed specifically for a multiplayer draft format that emphasized political maneuvering and subversion, moving away from the traditional one-on-one competitive structure of the game. The card itself embodies the predatory nature of the set’s draft environment, allowing players to draft creatures and absorb their keyword abilities into a single, evolving threat.
The artwork was illustrated by Aleksi Briclot, a veteran contributor to the game known for his atmospheric and visceral style. Briclot’s design focuses on the chaotic synthesis of biological parts, reflecting the card's mechanic of aggregating power from other creatures. Upon its release, the card was received as a high-impact, flavorful addition to the Conspiracy environment, noted by players for its ability to dominate late-game board states in casual, social play.
