Where it came from
An Incident Has Occurred was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set, the fourth in the Un-series, was designed to blend the traditional silver-bordered humor of previous installments with a more cohesive sci-fi carnival aesthetic. The card serves as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the chaotic, often absurd nature of tabletop gaming environments, utilizing the set's unique mechanics to interact with the physical state of the game.
The card’s visual direction was handled by illustrator Justine Mara Andersen, who leaned into a retro-futuristic, pulp-inspired style to match the broader theme of the set. Upon its debut, the card was received as a lighthearted piece of meta-commentary, appreciated by players for its ability to bring a moment of levity and unpredictability to matches. It remains a notable example of Wizards of the Coast's effort to integrate narrative whimsy into the mechanics of their trading card game.
