Annex

Annex was originally introduced during the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, serving as a blue enchantment that allows a player to gain control of a target land. Its design reflects the strategic utility of early Magic: The Gathering sets, focusing on resource denial and land manipulation. As a reprint in the Ninth Edition core set, which was released in 2005, the card featured updated border aesthetics and was intended to provide foundational tools for players to manage their opponents' mana bases in a standard format.

The illustration for this iteration of Annex was produced by Ron Spencer, a prolific artist known for his distinctively gritty and high-contrast style that defined much of the game’s aesthetic in the late 1990s and early 2000s. By the time of the Ninth Edition printing, Spencer’s work was synonymous with the darker, more visceral look of Magic, and the inclusion of his art in a core set helped maintain a sense of visual continuity for long-time players during the transition to the modern card frame.
