Where it came from
Annex was originally printed as a rare card in the 2002 Onslaught set for Magic: The Gathering, part of the Onslaught block which focused heavily on creature types and tribal mechanics. The card was designed as a blue enchantment that allowed players to enchant a land and take control of it, reflecting the set's broader theme of battlefield manipulation and resource denial through complex magical interactions.
The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, who utilized a moody, atmospheric style that became a hallmark of the era's card art. It was later included in 'The List', a curated selection of reprints integrated into Set Boosters starting in 2020. This inclusion was intended to provide long-time players with access to older, niche utility cards while introducing newer collectors to the mechanical history of the game's non-creature permanents.
