Where it came from
Annex was first introduced in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, later being reprinted as card number 59 in the Ninth Edition core set released in 2005. The card functions as an enchantment that allows a player to gain control of a target land, representing the strategic seizure of resources that defines much of the game's color-pie identity for blue mana.
The artwork for the Ninth Edition printing was illustrated by Thomas M. Baxa. His design captures the mystical, transformative process of magical appropriation, consistent with the broader aesthetic direction of Ninth Edition, which sought to refine the visual language of the game for a modernizing player base while maintaining the classic fantasy motifs established in the late 1990s.
