Where it came from
Anointed Procession was released in 2017 as part of the Amonkhet set for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a rare white enchantment, serving as a mechanical homage to the classic card Parallel Lives, but specifically tailored for a set themed around the afterlife and the ritualistic worship of the god-pharaoh Nicol Bolas. Thematically, it represents the endless, orderly lines of the initiate dead marching toward their destiny, a chilling reflection of the plane's manufactured cycle of reincarnation.
The artwork, created by Chase Stone, depicts the visual grandeur of the Anointed in a style that emphasizes the rigid, golden symmetry of the Amonkhet aesthetic. The design is widely lauded by players for its powerful synergy in token-based deck archetypes, quickly becoming a staple in Commander formats. Its reception was marked by consistent demand due to its unique doubling effect, leading to its inclusion in various reprint products and special frame treatments in subsequent years.
