Where it came from
Anointed Procession was released as part of the Amonkhet set in 2017, specifically featured as a rare promo card. The card represents a core mechanical theme of the Amonkhet plane, which centers on the worship of the God-Pharaoh and the structured, ritualistic society of Naktamun. It was designed to enhance token-based strategies, mechanically reflecting the relentless and overwhelming nature of the processional rituals depicted in the set’s narrative.
The artwork, illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, captures the aesthetic of the Bolas-influenced civilization, emphasizing golden hues and the rigid, ceremonial order of the initiates. Upon its release, the card was widely received by the Magic: The Gathering community as a staple for white-aligned token decks, particularly in the Commander format, where its ability to double token production proved both powerful and highly efficient for its mana cost.
