Provenance

Where it came from

The Ape token, designated number 12, was released as part of the Double Masters expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in 2020. This set was designed primarily as a high-value reprint-focused product, aiming to increase the availability of sought-after cards while providing a premium drafting experience. Tokens within the set were included to support the various mechanics that generated creature copies or summon effects during gameplay.

The artwork for this specific token was illustrated by Titus Lunter. Lunter’s design reflects the standard visual language established for the game's creature archetypes, utilizing a dynamic and grounded aesthetic typical of his contributions to the series. The token was well-received by the player base for its crisp, functional design, which remains a standard inclusion for decks utilizing cards like 'Gorilla Titan' or similar effects that rely on supplemental creature tokens.
