Provenance

Where it came from

The Ape token was released in 2014 as part of the Commander 2014 accessory set for Magic: The Gathering. These tokens were specifically designed to support the 'Built from Scratch' preconstructed deck, which centered on the legendary creature Daretti, Scrap Savant. The tokens were issued to provide players with physical representations of creatures generated by various card abilities during gameplay, serving as a functional utility piece within the popular Commander format.

The artwork for this specific token was created by Greg Staples, a long-time contributor to the Magic: The Gathering universe. Staples employed a gritty, textured illustrative style intended to evoke the raw and feral nature of the creature, fitting the mechanical theme of the artifact-heavy deck it accompanied. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the player base for its clear utility and the distinct, high-quality aesthetic that distinguished it from previous token iterations.
