Arc Lightning was originally introduced to the Magic: The Gathering card pool in the Odyssey expansion of 2001. As a sorcery that deals three damage divided among any number of targets, it was designed as a versatile utility card intended to help players manage board states by picking off multiple small creatures or finishing off a weakened opponent. Its inclusion in the 2009 Planechase set marked a shift in focus, as the release was specifically engineered to introduce the multiplayer Planechase format, which utilizes oversized planar cards to change the global rules of the game during play.

The artwork for this specific version was provided by Andrew Goldhawk, who brought a sharp, kinetic energy to the depiction of the spell.
