Provenance

Where it came from

Arc Lightning was originally introduced in the Urza's Saga set in 1998, designed as a versatile red sorcery capable of distributing three points of damage among any number of targets. When it was reprinted as number 97 in the 2014 set Khans of Tarkir, the card retained its mechanical identity while receiving updated art by Winona Nelson. This reprint aligned with the set's focus on the distinct clans of the plane of Tarkir, fitting within the aggressive, combat-oriented themes represented by the Mardu Horde.

The Khans of Tarkir version of the card captures the raw, volatile nature of dragon-inspired magic through Nelson's dynamic illustration. By this point in the game's history, the card was well-regarded by limited-format players for its utility in removing multiple small creatures or finishing off weakened opponents. The design remains a staple example of efficient red removal that provides the caster with flexibility in tactical decision-making during the main phase.
