Archmage's Charm

Archmage's Charm was first introduced as a rare card in the Modern Horizons set, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2019. This set was designed specifically for the Modern format, aiming to introduce powerful new tools that bypassed the standard requirements of joining the format through the traditional Standard rotation. The charm was crafted as a versatile utility spell, offering players a choice between drawing cards, countering a spell, or gaining control of a low-cost permanent, which allowed it to provide tactical flexibility in a variety of blue-based control strategies.

The card features artwork by Seb McKinnon, whose surreal and atmospheric style has become a defining aesthetic for many modern Magic: The Gathering cards. McKinnon’s design for this piece focuses on the intellectual and slightly ominous nature of high-level sorcery, portraying the archmage in a manner that emphasizes wisdom and arcane authority. Upon its release, the card was widely received by competitive players as a staple for control decks, eventually seeing a special reprint in the Modern Horizons 1 Timeshifted frame to celebrate its impact on the format's landscape.
