Where it came from
Ingenious Infiltrator was introduced in the 2019 set Modern Horizons as part of a cycle of cards designed to support the ninja archetype in non-rotating formats. The set was conceived as a way to bring powerful, nostalgic mechanics into the Modern format without needing them to pass through a standard expansion. The art for this card was created by Winona Nelson, who emphasized the fluid, agile nature of the character to reflect its synergy with the Ninjutsu keyword.
The card was received favorably by players for its ability to generate card advantage in aggressive tempo decks. By allowing a player to draw a card whenever a ninja deals combat damage, it provided a necessary payoff for the ninja strategy. Its inclusion in the Modern Horizons set marked a successful attempt to modernize niche tribal archetypes, making the card a staple in dedicated rogue and ninja-themed decks across various formats.
