Where it came from
Deep Forest Hermit was introduced in the Modern Horizons expansion, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2019. This set was uniquely designed to introduce new cards directly into the Modern format without them passing through a Standard rotation, allowing for deeper mechanical complexity and nods to established archetypes. The card was designed as a thematic callback to the legendary card Deranged Hermit from the Urza's Destiny set, echoing its ability to generate a swarm of Squirrel tokens and provide a collective power boost.
The card’s illustration was provided by artist Igor Kieryluk, who was tasked with capturing the essence of a cryptic, nature-bound recluse. Kieryluk’s work leans into the verdant, mystical aesthetic common to green-aligned creatures in the game, emphasizing the Hermit's connection to the forest floor and his squirrel companions. Upon release, the card was well-received by players looking to invigorate tribal squirrel strategies and midrange green decks, becoming a staple for those seeking to maximize board presence through token generation.
