Where it came from
The Archon of Cruelty was introduced in the 2021 set Modern Horizons 2, a product designed specifically for the Modern format of Magic: The Gathering. As a high-cost creature, it was engineered to be a powerful finisher, offering a blend of immediate board impact and resource attrition through its triggered abilities. The design intent was to provide a formidable threat that rewards players for navigating long-game strategies, eventually becoming a staple in various control and reanimator archetypes across multiple formats.
The artwork for this specific promotional version, numbered 75s, was illustrated by Greg Staples. Staples, a veteran artist for the game, opted for a dramatic, visceral depiction of the Archon that emphasizes its imposing and predatory nature. The card was well-received by the player base for its striking aesthetic and its undeniable efficacy in competitive play, quickly establishing itself as one of the defining creatures of its era.
